Common Name: “White Shark” Isopod
Scientific Name: Cubaris sp. “White Shark”
Family: Armadillidiidae
Origin: Southeast Asia (mainly regions of Malaysia and Thailand).
Characteristics:
- Size: Adults can reach between 2-3 cm.
- Coloration: Distinctive appearance with a white base and grayish or slightly silvery patterns, giving them a unique and “scaly” look.
- Shape: Flattened and segmented body with a hard exoskeleton that allows them to roll into a ball for protection, similar to other Armadillidiidae species.
- Lifespan: Approximately 1-2 years under optimal conditions.
Habitat:
- Environment: Prefers warm and humid environments. Ideal conditions include humidity levels of 70-80% and temperatures between 22-26°C.
- Substrate: Requires organic-rich substrates such as decaying leaves, wood pieces, and moss.
- Conditions: Needs shaded and dark areas to hide and roam freely.
Diet:
- Feeding: Omnivorous, feeding on decaying organic matter like leaves, wood, plant debris, and calcium-rich foods such as crushed eggshells.
- Supplementation: Adding calcium to their diet helps strengthen their exoskeleton.
Reproduction:
- Type: Sexual reproduction, with noticeable size differences between males and females.
- Care of offspring: Females carry their eggs in a brood pouch (marsupium) until the juveniles are fully developed and ready to explore their surroundings.
Care and Maintenance:
- Humidity: Maintaining constant humidity is essential. Occasionally misting the substrate helps keep the necessary moisture level.
- Terrarium: Can be kept in a terrarium with a mesh lid for ventilation, ensuring proper moisture retention. Substrates that support organic decomposition and provide hiding spots are recommended.
- Tankmates: Compatible with other isopods and small species with similar humidity requirements.
Additional Notes:
- Temperament: Peaceful and calm, though some individuals may be slightly more active.
- Appeal to collectors: Its unique appearance and attractive coloration make it a favorite among isopod enthusiasts.
This isopod is ideal for both terrarium decoration and for those interested in studying the ecology and behavior of isopods in controlled environments.
